Q: How quickly will my account be set up for me to use?
A: Generally your account will be set up within a few hours, however we guarantee that your site will be up within 24 hours. Once you receive your welcome email detailing your IP address and login information, you can immediately begin uploading your site.

Q: Does Blue Sprocket back up my site for me?
A: By default, only system information is backed up each night. You have the ability however, to back up your site information as often as you like through your control panel. Blue Sprocket offers managed backup services for an additional charge.

Q: Can I register my domain name with Blue Sprocket?
A: Yes. Click here to see if your domain is available. The following extension are available: .com, .net, .org, .cc, .info, .name and .us. We offer domain registration at a cost of $15.00 per year (.com, .net and .org). This is a 45% savings over Network Solutions. It is important to note that regardless of where you host your site you will need to enter the correct name server information into your record for your site to display using the domain name. Currently this information is:

Nameserver/IP Address

ns1.bluesprocket.com 72.233.40.44
ns2.bluesprocket.com 72.35.65.13

Basic Troubleshooting

All files are case sensitive. In order to make it easy on your visitors, we recommend that you used lower-case throughout your site.

If you find cgi-scripts are not performing correctly, first check the path to perl, and also be sure that you uploaded them in ASCII format. If they are still not working, be sure your permissions are set correctly. Most cgi scripts should be set to 755. As a final measure, you can check with support. It is important to note however that due to the opensource nature and vast number of Perl scripts, Bluesprocket can not officially support individual scripts other than those provided with your account. If you are unable to get help in any of the above ways, it is best to contact the script creator.

By default any file named index.html, index.htm, or default.html will display automatically in the given folder. A good example of this is the index.html file that displays when you connect to http://www.yourdomain.com.

Q: When I try to access my domain in my browser, I receive an error.
A: This is usually caused when the domain information has not been populated across the Internet yet. After you register a domain, it can take up to 72 hours for the domain to be available. In the mean time you can access your website via the address given in your welcome message.

Be sure to also check that your name servers are set correctly in your DNS record.

Q: Where do I install cgi scripts?
A: By default, your account will be set up to run cgi (Perl) scripts in the cgi-bin directory. It is probably a good idea to use subdirectories within the cgi-bin directory to keep your scripts organized.

Your cgi-bin directories absolute path (required in some instances) is '/home/your_accountname/www/cgi-bin'

It can be accessed through the web at 'http://www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin

The path to perl is '#!/usr/bin/perl'

Be sure to chmod all scripts to 755 or 775 for them to run correctly. This can be accomplished by most FTP programs such as wsFTP.

Q: How do I make my web site accessible by the domain name?
A: There are two scenarios where this is applicable. When you sign up for a Bluesprocket account, you are either creating a brand new website or transferring from another host. In either case, one of the first things that we do when creating your account is add your DNS records to our nameservers. All you need to do to make your website accessible through the domain name, is change your DNS record (with your registrar) to point to the Bluesprocket name servers. You will need two, and they are currently:

ns1.bluesprocket.com
ns2.bluesprocket.com

Most registrars allow you to change this information online.

Q: Do you support forum scripts?
A: Yes, we support many of the common forum scripts available. These include vBulletin, Ikonboard (mySQL version only), phpBB, phpBB2, YABB, and others. If you have any questions regarding whether or not we support your particular forum script, just email us at sales@bluesprocket.com.

Q: I am trying to use a SSI call to invoke a cgi script, but it is not working. Why?
A: When using a SSI call to invoke a cgi script, the first thing to check is the path that you are using to call the cgi-script. By default, the server assumes that the the directory root is the web root, and does NOT require the absolute path. For example, if you were calling a test.cgi file in the cgi-bin directory, the path would be /cgi-bin/test.cgi, NOT /home/sites/www.yourdomain.com/web/cgi-bin/test.cgi.

Q: I am trying to create a directory outside of the web root, so that it will not be accessible from the Internet. Why can't I seem to get it to work?
A: The proper place to put directories that you don't want web accesible, is in /, however this directory is initially owned by root to prevent accidental deletion or corruption. If you would like to create directories in /, just send an email to support@bluesprocket.com and ask that the permissions be changed on the directory to let you do so.

Email Questions

Q: What is my POP3 server name?
A: Your POP3 server is used for incoming email and the name is mail.yourdomain.com. Enter this setting in the appropriate area within your email program.

Q: What is my SMTP server name?
A: Your SMTP server name is mail.yourdomain.com. It is used for outgoing mail and is usually set in the same place as your POP3 server name.

Q: What is the path to Sendmail?
A: For any scripts that you install which require the path to sendmail use :

/usr/sbin/sendmail

Q: How do I create a catch-all email address?
A: By default, a "catch-all" email account is set up with your initial user ID. This means that email sent to anything@yourdomain.com will be delivered to your primary ID.This can be modified in your control panel.

Q: Is there a way that I can access my email via the web?
A: Yes. All accounts come with webmail installed. We use SquirrelMail to provide this service and it can be accessed at the following address:

http://www.yourdomain.com/webmail

It's important to note that if you intend to also check your email via a client application such as Eudora or Microsoft Outlook, you will need to change your settings to leave email on the server for a period of time. Depending on how regularly you check email, 10-15 days is usually sufficient.

Q: I try to send mail using Outlook, but get an error. I can receive email.
A: This is usually just a matter of properly configuring your Outlook mail client (or Outlook Express). To ensure better security, Bluesprocket.com mail servers require the use of SMTP authentication. This is an option in the configuration settings for your mail program and usually says "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication."

Billing and Accounts

Q: How can I change my personal information?
A: Send an email to support@bluesprocket.com requesting the change. Be sure to include your secret word, domain name, the old information and the new information. Also, please use the email account that you entered when signing up.

Q: How do I cancel my account?
A: You may cancel your account at any time by sending an email to support@bluesprocket.com. Be sure to provide password, domain name, username, and effective date of cancellation. We do not provide partial refunds, so your account will remain available through the end of your billing cycle should you change your mind. Also, although not required, we would be interested to know why you are canceling your account. We are always looking for ways to make our service better.

Q: How do I change my credit card information?
A: To change your credit card information, send an email to support@bluesprocket.com. Do not include your credit card information in the email. We will respond with instructions for changing the information.

Q: Can I upgrade my account?
A: Yes. If you feel that a different plan would suit you better, just send us an email at support@bluesprocket.com with what you are looking for and we will be happy to help. If your needs are not met by one of our standard plans, we will also be happy to work with you to create a custom plan that will.

Due to the way credit card processing works, we can not change the amount charged to a credit card without your permission. Because of this, if the change results in a different cost, the old reoccurring charge will be stopped, and a new one must be started.

Q: How will I be charged if I exceed my plans allocations?
A: In most cases we will contact you the first month that you exceed the bandwidth or disk space that is allocated to you and offer for you to upgrade to the next plan or one that fits your needs without incurring any penalties. In the second month that you exceed your allocation, you will receive an electronic invoice which you can pay online by credit card.

If you consistently exceed your plans allocations Bluesprocket.com may request that you upgrade to a more appropriate plan to reduce the administration required to keep up with these extra charges.

* Bluesprocket.com does not limit the amount of bandwidth that is used and the customer accepts full responsibility for any charges that are incurred for exceeding what is allocated.

If this doesnt answer your question, please send your support issues to support@bluesprocket.com. Please include your account number in your correspondence. Thanks!
